Overview

The GT Nexus platform helps clients track all aspects of their supply chain. As part of Transportation Management, the shipping order application allows suppliers and buyers to create new shipping orders. This project took into consideration Infor’s design system and how this would be implemented into the GT Nexus front-end framework.

Collaborated with the lead IA, created job stories to help define the user's role, created wireframes and moved them into polished designs while working with the engineering team.

Problem

As a legacy product, the UI for creating a new shipping order hadn't been updated and customers were looking for new features to improve their employee's workflow. The key features and considerations for the redesign were to improve data entry, reduce the cognitive load, and to reduce the number of steps in the process to improve efficiency. As part of the redesign, I was able to test design assumptions during a customer workshop.

Understanding the existing product

I evaluated the existing application to assess redundancies, pain points, and usability issues. A heuristic evaluation helped identify questions for the development team and product owners. After the evaluation, I  created the architecture which helped clarify which screens we needed to focus on at a high level.

Wireframes and Workshop

I created wireframes to help guide the product and engineering teams with what needed to be prioritized in each screen and also be able to test them during a customer workshop. As part of the workshop, we conducted a set of user validation sessions and a collaborative solution mapping workshop, to validate the new Shipping Order designs.

Conclusion

The workshop results helped create a prioritization matrix that guided both design and development on what needed to be included in phase one. The workshop and involvement of development early in the process helped stakeholders see the value of UX and research. The final designs were approved by team members, including three FEF components that will be added to the FEF library. The product is currently in beta.

Final thoughts

Since I was only able to test on customers, the feedback was focused on business needs and customization. The limited access to end-users; the ones creating shipping orders, gave me a limited understanding of their needs, workflow, and workstation. Ideally, the next release would allow for the new Shipping Order to be tested with actual end-users to further iterate on the designs.
