Overview

Infor Rhythm is a cloud-based B2B engagement platform delivering design services and ERP (enterprise resource planning) integration to optimize customer experience and support a diverse user base.

Challenge

Given that Rhythm serves different industries, connects to Infor ERPs and provides customers with tailored experiences, my goal for Rhythm for Commerce was to help establish the groundwork for the future verticals including Rhythm for Civics and Rhythm for Healthcare. Rhythm for Commerce serves B2B customers and allows them to showcase their product catalog, complete transactions and connect to other Infor products. Since Rhythm was a brand new product built by Infor, we faced some challenges but we were able to get an MVP, Rhythm for Civics and Commerce are in General Availability.

Components

The component library consists of 40+ base components customers can use to build out their own e-commerce website, beginning with a base theme. Two other designers and I worked on the wires and design of each component. I focused on putting together the base theme. The base theme allows new customers to have an e-commerce website and customize it to their needs. Each page on the base theme focused on the different user needs and processes such as having a product catalog, a product page, a shopping cart, navigation, search and a checkout process. Once we had a base theme we were able to use it as a foundation for other Rhythm themes.

Design System

Since Rhythm would be used to build tailored experiences for each customer, a component library was designed along with a design system. I started finding patterns across the components and building out a UI library. This included maintaining the UI library and creating a grid system to be responsive so components could be used in different layouts. The design system improved Rhythm’s scalability and provided a guide for designers and developers working on the product.

UI Library

The UI library helped other designers on the project keep the design language consistent as components were being created for other verticals. Once components were in development, the UI kit became a tool that team members outside of the design and development teams were able to reference. To ensure the product was scalable, the UI library only outlined front-end styling such as buttons, link styles, typography, notification messages, Sass color functions and more.

Product Development

With a design system and a base set of components in place, myself and another UX designer focused on development support, design updates, and new features. The roadmap for the new features was created by the Business Analyst and focused on client needs. We would make the necessary high fidelity wires and present them to the team for feedback and collaborate on Jira to ensure the feature update was being tracked and communicated to the whole team. At the time the development team was based in Linköping, Sweden and the UX team in NYC.

Research

Since there were time constraints at the beginning of the project we relied on domain knowledge from Product Owners and Business Analysts. Near the end of development for the MVP we had the chance to conduct user tests on a handful of potential users interested in Rhythm for Commerce. Another Designer and I had the opportunity to conduct in-person interviews at bicycle shops. We asked owners about their workflow and their current experience purchasing bicycles from their distributors. We focused on a task-based test plan and I created a click-through prototype that was used for testing. Their feedback about existing pain points, usability issues, and other challenges provided us with valuable insights that were influential for platform updates and new features moving forward. The findings on how to improve efficiency, productivity, and end-user satisfaction were collected in a usability test result document that I shared with the team.
